Botox® is an injectable substance composed of botulinic toxin, produced by Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that causes muscular paralysis. When injecting this toxin in selected muscles, it produces paralysis for periods between 4 and 6 months. The observed effect is a smooth skin without wrinkles that will remain so, as long as the toxin effect lasts.
The most frequent use of the toxin in plastic surgery is for aesthetic enhancement of the upper part of the face, using it for crows feet, forehead and frown lines. Many other places can be injected to improve the aesthetics, such as the wrinkles produced around the upper lip. Another common use of the product is for excessive sweating of the hands and underarms. When used in this region, the effect is a complete cessation of sweat for as long as 1 year.
The procedure is done in approximately 1 hour in the doctor’s office and patients continue with their normal life after application.
For severe wrinkling, surgical procedures may be more appropriate, such as a facelift, forehead lift, and eyelid surgery.
If you are considering Botox injection, consult a qualified doctor about your goals and expectations from the treatment.
What are Fillers?
Fillers are injectable substances used to improve or increase the volume of specific areas of the face. Several compounds are available and are generally chosen by the doctor’s preference and the patients needs (Roafilan®, Artesense®, Juvederm®, Restylane®). It is preferable (in the doctor’s personal opinion) to use absorbable fillers which are degraded in approximately 8 months.
It is also feasible to use the patient’s fat as a filler. Fat is extracted at the same procedure and after a preparation process, injected into the desired areas. The main advantage of this method is that there is no possibility of rejection and the effects can last longer. Also, the fat can be enriched with the patient´s stem cells in a single procedure to achieve a more permanent result and with great improvement in the quality of facial tissues and skin hydration.
Fillers and fat are used to increase lip volume, fill skin creases and wrinkles and increase the volume in other specific areas, like the enhancement in the projection of the cheeks, chin or the mandible line.
Side effects are extremely rare, the most common is a headache that usually resolves in 12 hours and responds to any pain killer. Other side effects are redness or small bruising at the injection sites, these resolve usually in less than 24 hours.
