Located in the Bahía de Todos Santos, Ensenada is a city of over 300,000 inhabitants with a mild year-round climate. It is an important commercial and fishing port as well as a cruise ship stop, having the deepest bay in Baja. About 70 miles south of Tijuana and only a two-hour drive from San Diego, Ensenada has become a favorite destination for Southern Californians on short vacations by car.
Many come for the nightlife, whale watching during migration season, sport fishing and surfing at San Miguel Beach and Todos Santos Island, as well as windsurfing. Others come for wine tours and tasting. Nearly 90 percent of Mexico’s total wine production lies within the valleys of San Vicente, Santo Tomás, and Guadalupe, all located in the municipality of Ensenada. A two-week wine harvest festival, Las Fiestas de la Vendimia, is a popular draw for foreign visitors every year in August.
Other attractions are the Baja 1000 off-road race in November and the Baja 500 race in June, as well as the world’s largest marine geyser, “La Bufadora,” just south of town. Ensenada also holds one of the biggest Lenten carnivals in Mexico.
