Frequently Asked Questions

Many of the inquiries we receive have already been answer at one time or another by our physician/authors. Please read below, yours might be one of them. Otherwise visit our Doctor Q&A to ask a question.

Q: What is the difference between the online and print guides?

A: The print guides include a directory of English-speaking physicians and hospitals. This peer-reviewed, unbiased directory is unique and is not available anywhere on the web or in any other guidebooks. Also unique to the book is the city emergency and communications information as well as the city and regional maps, pinpointing medical facilities, police and fire stations, embassies and consulates and other points of interest.

Q: Can I request a referral to a medical specialist in Mexico?

A: Due to the flood of emails and phone calls from our readers interested in receiving surgery or treatments in Mexico, in 2006 MedToGo developed the Medical Tourism program. Visit this page, complete the application and our doctors will match you with a hospital and doctor in your requested Mexican city. We’ll assist you in scheduling your trip and will provide you with a fluent English-speaking liaison in your host city for all your needs and concerns. Our doctors have developed a rigorous screening policy to ascertain that participants be only treated by Mexico’s finest health-care providers.

Q: Can I recommend my doctor?

A: Yes, we accept recommendations. Though we have been researching health-care in Mexico for over 5 years, there is the chance we may have overlooked a doctor or two. Send us your doctor’s information and the next time we are in his city we will arrange a meeting.

Q: How does MedToGo select physicians to be listed in their guidebooks?

A: The selection process for MedToGo physicians is objective and is done with the best interest of the traveler in mind. Please visit How MedToGo Selects Physicians for details.

Q: I am a board-certified physician and work and reside in Mexico. How can I be listed in the MedToGo guidebooks?

A: Please send us a copy of your latest board-certification(s), a copy of your cedula profesional, a signed recommendation from your hospital director, your resume and relevant documentation. Next time we are in your city we will arrange to meet with you for an interview. There is absolutely no fee to hospitals or doctors to be listed in our guidebook. We list only the most qualified physicians and best hospitals in our books. No individual or company has ever paid to be listed in our guidebooks.

Q: Will my US insurance policy cover me in Mexico?

A: Many private Mexican hospitals do not accept foreign insurance, as insurance companies often either do not reimburse the medical provider for services imparted or demand serious discounts. It is for this reason that the majority of Mexican private hospitals prefer advanced cash or credit card payment. Patients must then submit payment information to their private insurance carrier, which depending on the type of policy, may or may not be reimbursed. It is recommended that, prior to purchasing a new policy, travelers inquire into the particulars of their plan.
