Progreso is a former fishing village that has long drawn Méridanos (Mérida’s inhabitants) fleeing from the scalding city heat. Back in the sixties and seventies, several U.S. and Canadian expatriates caught onto this trend and bought homes along the coast. A few years ago, Progreso began welcoming trans-Atlantic cruise ships to its port. People come here to escape city life, walk along the seaside promenade (el malecon), and relax on the beach.
