As the final stages of Cancun neared completion, architect Roman Rivera and his associates began searching for land south of Cancun to begin their next project – Puerto Aventuras. The plan was to build two large marinas, an 18-hole golf course, six hotels, 1,200 condominiums and 700 single-family villas in a 600-acre spread. Though the construction is not yet complete, Puerto Aventuras attracts a large number of family visitors who are after a safe and luxurious holiday environment within a self-sufficient and self-contained community.
Puerto Aventuras is known primarily for the San Carlos Marina, which is the only marina along the Mayan Riviera. Inside the marina you will find the Dolphin Discovery facility, which is surrounded by restaurants and bars, where you can sit back to watch the show. Or you can put on a swimsuit and take a swim with the dolphins. There are also boats available at the marina if you want to take a Caribbean cruise.
As the name indicates, Puerto Aventuras is a great place to find adventure, including eco-tours, jungle adventure tours, windsurfing and open-water and cenote scuba diving. Fatima Bay is the main beach area with more than 1.5 miles of beachfront, and only a short way off the coast you will find Bird Island, which serves as a nocturnal sanctuary for various bird species. The water here is transparent and warm, making this an excellent location for scuba divers and snorkelers.
