The Puerto Morelos community is made up of many foreigners who have relocated here to make this their permanent home, leaving behind overpopulated cities and smoggy air. They have done an excellent job of carving out a life, as they own many of the downtown restaurants, bookstores, yoga centers and dive shops. They also have developed a unified voice, struggling to fight off the developers that threaten to destroy the mangroves that are essential to the reef’s health. Though parts of the mangroves have been compromised, the community continues to protect Puerto Morelos’ status as a National Marine park and keep development at a minimum.
We received claims that there were more yoga schools per capita than anywhere else in the Yucatan Peninsula. Though this is difficult to believe, without discounting Tulum, we did find several yoga schools offering daily classes as well as several outstanding yoga centers, such as Casa Lalita and Villas Shanti, offering workshops and retreats. The relaxed and peaceful environment creates the ideal surroundings for sunset beach yoga.
