Standing on a small bay on the Gulf of California near the mouth of the Río Yaqui, Guaymas is the second largest port on Mexico’s Pacific coast (after Manzanillo). Just five miles or so up the coast is San Carlos, which is both close enough and small enough to often be linked with its neighbor.
Visitors to San Carlos come to escape the big city life, take in the warm weather and view the whale migration in the Sea of Cortés. Others dock their boats for fuel and maintenance and take advantage of the over 350 boat slips located in the two marinas. An artificial reef and warm ocean water in the shallow bay make this a diving town as well.
With an 18-hole championship golf course, several RV parks, and relatively affordable opportunities for purchasing property, San Carlos is a sleepy little town made up mostly of U.S. and Canadian expatriates. Approximately 70 percent of San Carlos’ 7,000 inhabitants are retirees, some of whom reside here during the high season and others all year round. Though there are no elderly care centers, for the few that require it, in-home care is not difficult to locate once in town.
