San Cristóbal is a picturesque town filled with local color and quaint architecture. Its surrounding villages and natural attractions also hold appeal for visitors. Up in the highlands among the pines, temperatures are cool, turning bitterly cold in the winter, when visitors should bring sweaters, coats, hats, and gloves. Apart from a few fireplaces, there is little by way of heating. Banks tend to shut early, and many businesses and shops do not accept credit cards. Therefore, tourists should bring cash should they decide to buy local goods.
San Cristóbal is completely safe and hospitable. Those visiting nearby Indian villages should do so as part of a group and be sensitive to avoid offending the locals. The isolated conflicts mentioned earlier have tended to take place in remote, rural areas, but nevertheless tourists are advised to travel by day, rather than by night, in and out of San Cristóbal.
