Shibinsky Martin - Metabolic Gastric Bypass Testimonial
Metabolic Gastric Bypass Surgery – It’s been almost six months since my metabolic gastric bypass surgery, and I want to share my story with others. My journey started in June 2007 when I was first diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and High Cholesterol at age 25. I never really considered myself obese, but I was a bit over weight with a BMI of 33.5. This diagnosis was devastating for me and my family, and my outlook on life and my future seemed to dim. At one point my diabetes seemed out of control and I was becoming insulin resistant. I was taking insulin and later opted for an insulin pump in order to give me the freedom to continue my very active work schedule.
My friends and family know me as a very determined person wasn’t going to let diabetes take over my life. I knew there had to be a way to treat my diabetes and improve my quality of life. I made it my mission to find a better way to treat my diabetes.
I looked into a traditional gastric bypass, after reading research studies about the effects of bariatric surgery on diabetes. I contacted several bariatric surgeons in my area, and they wouldn’t even see me because I didn’t meet the BMI criteria even with a diagnosis of diabetes and high cholesterol. There were only a few surgeons performing surgeries for the treatment of diabetes in people with a lower BMI in the US, but that cost was more then I could never manage (some quotes up to 30 thousand dollars). While watching the news one night I saw a segment on medical tourism. It talked about medical tourism and the affordability of potentially lifesaving procedures, for people who did not have insurance. I knew that medical tourism would be the answer. I started searching for medical tourism companies who offered bariatric surgery for people with a lower BMI for the treatment of diabetes. MedToGo International was one of only a few who offered this service.
I contacted MedToGo and was connected to Mr. Robert Page, who would be my surgery coordinator. He was so helpful and patient with me during the process. What really stood out about Robert, was that he wasn’t approaching me like a salesman, but as someone who wanted me to make an informed decision about my health.
I finally made the decision to have a metabolic gastric bypass surgery with Dr. Joya in Puerto Vallarta Mexico on February 9, 2010. Robert coordinated the whole trip and allowed me to speak to Dr. Joya and ask questions. His attention to detail allowed me to concentrate on my recovery and not on my itinerary.
Robert has followed up with me monthly since my surgery, for that I am grateful.
Since my metabolic gastric bypass surgery I have lost almost 51 lbs. I went from 180lbs to 129lbs. I no longer use insulin or any other diabetes medications. I feel great, and have a newfound outlook on my life. I now live everyday with optimism, enjoy my new healthy and more active lifestyle.
I want to thank Robert and MedToGo International for guiding through the start of my journey, they have helped me get my health and my life back.
