The US Consulate issues warnings to tourists who travel to the southwestern states of Oaxaca and Guerrero. Although there is no general targeting of tourists, the region is known for occasional violent crimes and kidnappings. Most of these insurrections have been against the Mexican government or its citizens. Small bands of guerillas have also been known to hijack buses or automobiles on rural highways. For your protection, expect military roadblocks on highways in these states and be prepared for thorough searches of your vehicle. Whenever possible, travel on the toll or "cuota" highways and avoid the free or "libre" highways. The toll roads are less populated and much safer. Also, whether traveling by automobile or bus, we highly recommend that you travel during the day.
