Valciclovir
(Valcyclovir)
Used to Relieve Herpes attacks:
- For first episode: Take 1000 mg twice daily for 10 days.
- For recurrent outbreaks: Take 500 mg twice daily for three days.
- To suppress outbreaks: If fewer than nine outbreaks/year, take 500 mg once daily; otherwise, take 1000 mg once daily.
Children’s use: Consult physician.
Side effects and precautions: nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and joint discomfort. Use with caution in kidney disease and in the elderly (see package insert for complete list of side effects and contraindications).
